{"id":835,"date":"2015-09-13T18:39:30","date_gmt":"2015-09-13T23:39:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gmachronicles.com\/?p=3"},"modified":"2019-06-07T16:07:42","modified_gmt":"2019-06-07T16:07:42","slug":"on-the-road-together","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gmachronicles.com\/index.php\/on-the-road-together\/","title":{"rendered":"On the Road, Together"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1949 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/gmachronicles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/road1-900x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gmachronicles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/road1.jpg 900w, https:\/\/gmachronicles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/road1-264x300.jpg 264w, https:\/\/gmachronicles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/road1-768x874.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gmachronicles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/road1-620x705.jpg 620w, https:\/\/gmachronicles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/road1-450x512.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It is our first road trip together, just the two of us, this fellow and I, and I consider that fact briefly as we climb into our seats.\u00a0 Is there something more I should have done to prepare, I wonder&#8211;but, too late now.\u00a0 We are traveling in my quirky little car, a privilege he has been requesting for some time, so he is upbeat as we settle in for departure.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Found my cupholder!&#8221; he declares as he wedges his moist, cool, open can down into it, no spill, amazingly, in sight.\u00a0 He enjoys the view for a block or two, then leans in to peruse the dashboard.\u00a0 &#8220;We need gas,&#8221; he observes, repeating for emphasis, &#8220;you know that, right?\u00a0 We need gas?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I think we can get there fine, I assure him cheerfully, so we&#8217;ll stop on the way back.<\/p>\n<p>This resolved, he quickly moves on.\u00a0 &#8220;Is there any music in this car?&#8221; he inquires, and I freeze briefly again, thinking that at this stage in our relationship I should know his musical tastes but, alas, do not. What kind of music do you like?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Loud,&#8221; and this is firm, clear, delivered without pause.\u00a0 &#8220;I like loud music.&#8221;\u00a0 Something upbeat, I&#8217;m thinking, so I punch the selector on a playlist of classic R&amp;B and wrench the volume knob to the upward range.\u00a0 &#8220;No,&#8221; he shakes his head sorrowfully, &#8220;that&#8217;s not loud.\u00a0 I want LOUD music,&#8221; amplifying his own vocals for emphasis.<\/p>\n<p>I can feel myself beginning to tense up, unable to discern what is desired, wondering why male travel preferences must be both universal and unattainable for their co-piloting females.\u00a0 And this male is four years old, delivering his personal travelogue requests from the securely buckled environs of his toddler booster in the backseat.
